Augusta, Sicilya, İtalya

I'll do my best to wait for you dear guests. In case I cannot my mum and sister will be there for the key and all the infos you'll need. I will be available on my mobile at every time day & night for any reason.
If you love rocky beaches, fishing, eating fish, waking up to bird song you are in the right place.
If you are looking for a place from where you can easily move up and down Sicily you are still in the right place.

The northern seaside land of Augusta where the house is located is characterized by high cliffs, among the most beautiful in Sicily, alternating clear rocky beaches located in the middle of rocky coves where the salt and the power of water has shaped walls forming jagged arms marine similar to the fjords of Northern Europe, but also digging deep underwater caves (whose exploration is recommended only to those who have some experience in underwater exploration).
It must be said that all eastern sicily cliffs are preferably visit early in the morning, allowing them to admire the spectacular sunrise horizon of the Ionian Sea.
Augusta, on the east coast of Sicily between Katane and Syracuse, is a very strategic location: only 20' from Catania airport, 2 hours from Comiso’s and 3 and a half hours from Palermos’ airport.
At a distance of 500 metres there is a huge supermarket, a bakery, a bar, a pharmacy. At 2 km the hospital and an atm machine.
20' from the Greek town of Syracuse, 30' from Catania, 30' minutes from the barock of Noto, 30' from the natural reserve of Vendicari, 1 hour from Taormina, 1 hour and a half from Etna.
Even if the closest sandy beach is 'Agnone' (driving north on the ss 114 orientale sicula direction Catania) I would suggest to avoid it (dirty and theft risk) and drive south either on the ss 114 or the highway to the nicest 'Fontanebianche' and 'La Marchesa' south of Syracuse, 'Eloro', 'Vendicari', 'San Lorenzo' (my favourite) south of Noto.

AMARAS is located at 5 minutes driving distance between the fisherman village of Brucoli and the lovely Megarian town of Augusta. The villa on the sea is placed in one of the most quiet and elegant residential area of the territory of Augusta.
The ancient town of Augusta is actually an island, made by cutting an isthmus in the 16th century and connected to the main mainland by 2 bridges. The oldest one will let you enter through the ancient ‘Porta Spagnola’ and from both you’ll enjoy the view of the ‘Castello Svevo’.
Augusta is plenty in churches and it worths a coffee in its main square Piazza Duomo.
There’s a charming lighthouse at 3 km distance in an area with a couple of bars where you can enjoy the best ‘schiacciata’ sandwich ever tasted at night time. Ask for ‘Il Faro’ or ‘Sant’Elena’ and everybody will show you where to go and do not miss a daily and a night visit.

My favourite cliff ‘Lo Sbarcatore’. Dare a 10 minutes trekking down the cliffs to enjoy the view and the clear water and you’ll come back for sure.
Daily market mondays to saturdays in via Marina Ponente. Daily further market in the north side of the town (before the bridges) in via Soccorso, big Thursday market via Bruno Buozzi.
All the mentioned place are reachable by car. Almost everything at 5 minutes driving distance.

The best places to visit are obviously Syracuse, Vendicari, Noto, Marzamemi, Pantalica, Cavagrande, Katane, Taormina, but as all tourist guides are full of infos about them I’ll try to suggest alternative routes not far from Amaras in the following lines.

The fisherman village of Brucoli is the perfect place for dinner, with its fish restaurants and pizzerias. You can go there early in the morning and buy fresh fish from the fishermen at 7 am in the main little square, enjoy a drink just before lunch or sit in a restaurant with a nice view of the bay. Take a look at the ‘Aragonese Castle’ located on the northern side of the village at the entrance of a a second little hidden natural bay that really worths a visit.
Brucoli looks like a watercolor painting with all the colors of a painter’s palette: deep blue sea to the bright green of the Mediterranean vegetation with its aromatic essences and prickly pears that climb on the white limestone rocks of the northern foothills of the Iblei mountains. On this panorama stands in the distance mount Etna, situated right on the horizon.

I must mention the ancient fewpoints located on the south coast of Augusta, that between tanks, pipes, chimneys and refinings plants various small treasures miraculously escaped the wild industrialization of the coast to the south of the Megarian City: the Greek town of MEGARA IBLEA and southern THAPSOS, on the enchanting PENINSULA MAGNISI. Both of them not easy to be found, almost abandoned, forgotten by the authorities, covered by weeds, the Megara Iblea’s mocaic floors ruins will take your breath away and will let you understand a lot about Sicilian and Italian (un)culture. To find them drive south on SS114 direction Syracuse. Try to see brown signs ‘Megara Iblea’ and ‘Thapsos’ hidden and broken. There’s a ticket to pay for Megara Iblea. To Thapsos park the car and take a free walk on it. On the northern coast of it you’ll able to see a few necropolis. At a very short distance the Riserva Naturale Saline Priolo worths a visit.
