Zauchensee in winter
Zauchensee is little known place but is a true jewel in the Austrian crown. There is fantastic skiing on our doorstep and linked access to a huge variety of skiing areas, all covered by one lift pass. The resort itself is superbly located amongst the surrounding mountains so gets great snow conditions year after year. Wide open slopes and no queues explain why it is a training ground for National Ski Teams and has produced so many Austrian champions.
Zauchensee is a friendly village with a choice of authentic Austrian restaurants and bars with a traditional "chocolate box" feel. It has a new 4 km toboggan run providing even more fun. Have a look at the details below to learn more about the beautiful region, the fabulous winters and the glorious summers!
Ski Amade
Skiing in the Ski amade region offers unbeatable choice. Zauchensee and its immediate neighbours form part of Austria's largest ski and snowboard area, and offers some truly great skiing and boarding for families and groups of friends. The area spans over 25 separate ski locations with over 850kms of piste and 271 lifts and masses of inter-connecting ski slopes to suit all levels of skier, from beginner to expert.
Snow sure
Zauchensee village itself sits high in the mountains at 1300m, the town itself sits in the valley floor with the slopes extending well above the tree-line to 2400m. Zauchensee with its north facing slopes gets much better snow coverage than many of its neighbours, and other resorts at similar altitude. This means the snow often lasts well into May, and the conditions are often significantly better than the snow reports would suggest.
Skiing and Snowboarding
Zauchensee is a very charming, friendly resort with many tree-lined runs and a diverse range of skiing that will entertain all levels and tastes for weeks! The mountain is very well featured and provides not only many miles of excellent skiing, but wonderful scenery for touring too. Families and beginners are very well catered for and experts have a wealth of skiing available to them as well, on and off-piste.
Zauchensee is also a fabulous resort for snowboarders of all levels. As well as the tree lined pistes, there are plenty of off-piste areas to enjoy. A neighbour of Zauchensee is the superb area of Flachauwinkl, the home of "The Absolut Park". "The Absolut Park" (home to the ATOMIC Freestyle competition) is a snowboarder/freestyle skier’s paradise. You can more or less ski/board on everything you see. There are all kinds of ramps, rails, jumps and kickers as well as two halfpipes. The Freeride terrain and off-piste is also excellent in this resort, and Zauchensee is the seasonal choice for many professionals.
The resort has a great deal to offer beginners, and the range of inexpensive children's facilities that really helps Zauchensee stand out from the crowd. A good range of kids clubs and nursery slopes, as well as gentle runs for easy cruising, and very few drag lifts (great for beginners), making it a very popular choice for beginner skiers, boarders and families.
Summer in Zauchensee
Apartment Strims is situated in a beautifully peaceful part of Austria, in the mountain countryside located just at the bottom of Zauchensee’s famous Strimsgokel Mountain. It is surrounded by forest but with spectacular mountain views and 50 meters from Zauchensee's lake. Our mountain air is said to affect people in very special ways. At altitudes from 1350 metres, allergy sufferers can say goodbye to their complaints – there is nothing there that irritates. The Alpine air, with its anti-allergenic properties, has a strong regenerative effect on body, spirit and soul. Below we have listed 16 of the more local activity adventures that are available to you during the Summer and Autumn periods but for the more adventurous, visits to one on Austria's surrounding countries for a day trip (Italy, Germany, Czechoslovakia , Slovinia) is also possible.
Buying a Salzburgerland Card allows access to many of the attractions: castles, lifts and museums etc for free or a considerably reduced entrance price. There are more than 190 attractions included on the Salzburgerland card. Alternatively, you may just want to relax without the children, so why not enquire about our adult only weeks. Also, if you don't want to bring your car we can organise transfers from Salzburg airport and your food shopping too!
Walking/Hiking
There are more than 500 kilometres of Austrian hiking holiday footpaths in our region. It would take you several weeks to walk your way round all of them. You can start from our front door. Rosskopf, Strimskogel, Lackenkogel, Steinfeldspitze, Bürgeralm, Schwemmberg and Rossbrand, just to name a few, are all at your feet. Which route you decide to take depends on how long you want to be out and about for and with whom. For a half-day high-altitude hike, you can take a shortcut using the chairlift to the Gamskogl lodge this allows access to the Seekar district and Seekarscharte to Arche and back to Seekarsattel, then to Tagweideck, then to Schwarzkopf and finally to Gamskogel is exactly as far as it sounds: 5.5 hours for seasoned hikers. This does not of course include the breaks in the mountain lodges!
Climbing
Whether it is your first time climbing or you are experienced climber we can organise a professional mountain leader to take you to some of the region’s most scenic climbing areas to match or challenge your ability. Please email us with your enquiry. Climbing equipment can be provided by the guide.
Mountain Biking
Whether you ride a mountain (or road) bike to achieve sporting ambitions or for pure enjoyment, this region is a bikers' paradise. Whether you are a beginner, advanced or biking pro, the Salzburg Sportwelt offers the right trails and routes for bikers of all levels with over 450km of cycle routes. One thing we can guarantee you will always be surrounded by fabulous scenery on trails or roads. For the true freeriders and downhill fans there are World Cup mountain bike runs to try in nearby Wagrain and Schladming. For those who just prefer touring trails, there are mountain bike maps available so that during your stay you can cover the following routes:
Altenmarkt-Zauchensee mountain biking tour Steinwand Flachau mountain biking tour Grießenkar
Wagrain mountain biking tour Nazbauer
St.Johann mountain biking tour Alpendorfrunde
Radstadt mountain biking tour Bürgerberg
Flachau mountain biking tour Grießenkar
Kleinarl mountain biking tour Baierwald
Eben mountain biking tour Hochgründeckv
Filzmoos mountain biking tour Hofalm-Neuberg
Mountain Bike Park Wagrain

Rafting
For some real fun you must try rafting! Locally we have two professionally run rafting companies that will provide you with a day to remember. Bookings can be taken during your stay but it is probably best to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
High rope adventures
Our high rope park in Altenmarkt invites you to an exciting journey of discovery in the natural forest. There are 16 platforms/stations, upto 20 meters height and with exciting zip lines crossing the wild romantic Zauchbach river. The park provides an exciting experience for all ages (from 130cm height). After the equipment issue, a detailed enrolment and completion of the test circuits, the space "forest" is seen from a new perspective. The new challenges provide courage and skill, fun tasks, unusual views and a lot of fun!
If that's not enough you can alway try one of Europes longest Ziplines in nearby Grö bming.
Castles
There are too many Castles to list in the Salzburgerland region but here are a just a few:
What would Mozart's City be without the most prominent feature in its silhouette ... Hohensalzburg Fortress Reigning majestically over the city rooftops, Hohensalzburg Fortress dominates the cityscape. The 900-year-old Hohensalzburg Fortress, the city's chief landmark, is the biggest and most fully-preserved fortification in Europe. Built by Archbishop Gebhard during the investiture controversy in 1077, it served to protect the clergy and the population. Hohensalzburg Fortress offers visitors a stunning view of the city of Salzburg and its surroundings. Visitors can choose between the funicular, departing every 10 minutes, or taking a 30-minute walk to the top.
Hohenwerfen, the mighty 11th-century defensive bastion of Salzburg’s former prince archbishops that towers high above the Salzach Valley, offers visitors a rich selection of opportunities, including daily castle tours and the exhibition of historic weapons. This is home to the Salzburg State Falconer, with its daily falconry shows and the museum of falconry, a stylish castle tavern, the Knights’ Shop, together with numerous spectacular festive weekends and special events, ensuring an unforgettable visit for one and all.
Goldegg Castle was built in the 14th century and features wood-panelled rooms and a magnificent Knights’ Hall. On display in the Heritage Museum are antique country furniture, folk costumes, traditional Pinzgau “Perchten” costumes, old barbers’ and surgeons’ instruments, and lots more. Special Goldegg exhibition: "Glück und Glas", fragile glass treasures, old and new.
In keeping with their motto “Longing for the Middle Ages”, visitors to Mauterndorf Castle are invited to embark on a journey back through time. Slip into your armour and learn first-hand the art of attack and defence, pass through the toll gate and pay with jingling coins, Awaiting our younger visitors is a “Knights’ Adventure Playground”. NEW: the castle keep has been remodelled, now depicting various scenes from castle life on 6 different floors!
Swimming
The Altenmarkt - Zauchensee Therme Amade is a 26 million Euro swimming pool complex. It has various pools that cater for young and old, families and singles. There are various wellness facilities, different temperatures and pool types, indoors and outdoors and Europe’s first loop the loop water slide and now the new funnel slide.
Windsurfing and Sailing
During the summer months the lake is used for windsurfing, sailing and swimming. It is an ideal beginner’s area for getting out and starting to learn your water skills. If you are progressing to bigger and better things, then one of the larger more windy lakes in the surrounding areas are ideal too. Kite surfing lessons are also available on some of the larger lakes.
Roller Coasters
There are two toboggan runs locally, the Rittisberg Coaster, in Ramsau am Dachstein and the Lucky Flitzer, in Flachau. The toboggan runs offers downhill fun for young and old. Depending on your need for speed, a brake can and probably will be used quite a lot on your first few goes. You will want to go faster with each go you have! The runs are about 1.5 km long. The wind in your hair can be felt not only in summer but in winter or in rainy weather, the toboggans are equipped with a special braking system, which defies any kind of weather.
Museums
As you would expect with the history of Austria there are far too many museums to list with in the region. Please click here for a list of museums or email us for more information.
Horse riding - Pony trekking
There are many horse riding and trekking stables in Altenmarkt - Zauchensee and the surrounding areas making it a rider's paradise. The riding stables are equipped for ambitious sports riders as well as for beginners and children, who can ride on Island or Haflinger ponies for their first ride out. Even on those rare non sunny days Altenmarkt has an indoor riding centre.
Mines and Caves
The Dürrnberg Salt Mine is a fantastic visit and is located on the Dürrnberg near Hallein. It is one of the world’s oldest salt mines ever to have been opened to the public. The salt from the Dürrnberg brought riches and prosperity to the Salzburg region, from the ancient Celts to the Prince Archbishops. Salt, that inconspicuous and yet so generous gift of nature, had been lying hidden in the heart of the Dürrnberg for millions of years. Discover for yourself this mysterious world as you take a journey into the depths of Bad Dürrnberg’s Salt Worlds. You will take a small train into the galleries of the Bad Dürrnberg Salt Mine. Then you’ll ride down smoothly polished slides from one level to the next, until you are in the very depths of the mountain itself. Your mine guide will give you fantastic insights into this world below ground. Together with your group and still below ground, you will cross the former border with Germany. Floating on a raft, you will glide across a subterranean salt lake. An unforgettable journey to the center of the mountain.
The World of Ice Giants - The Ice Caves in Werfen are the biggest ice caves on Earth. Definitely a different way to experience the mountains. Discover the wonders of an icy labyrinth. You will see ice palaces of crystalline beauty, be drawn into an icy, wintry wonderland even on hot summer’s days. You catch your first glimpse of the mighty entrance to the ice caves at 20 meters in width and 18 meters tall, while still quite some distance away. The entire cave system extends out for more than 42 km, the first approx. 1 km-long segment of which features giant ice formations. This is also the part of the cave that is accessible to the public on guided tours. The average temperature in the interior of Werfen’s ice cave is about 0°C during the summer months.
The Lichtensteinklamm (Gorge) is a stunning roaring waterfall, boulders covered in dark green moss, a history shrouded in legend, rainbows wherever the sun touches the fine mist in the air… These are some of the things you will find in the Liechtensteinklamm gorge (or “Klamm”, for short), located near St. Johann in the heart of Salzburg. It is not only one of the most beautiful, but also one of the deepest, longest gorges in the Alps. For thousands of years the roaring falls and raging river have been cutting their path through the rock. In some parts the sheer walls of the gorge are so tall and so close together that the sky appears as nothing more than a narrow strip of blue high above the visitor. As early as 1875, people were so taken by this natural wonder that bridges and catwalks were built with money donated by Prince Liechtenstein II to make the Klamm accessible to the public.
The Lamprechtshöhle (Cave) is one of Europe’s most extensive cave systems and the deepest walkable cave in the entire world. Those areas which are open to the public can be reached by boardwalks that are easy to navigate.
Wellnesss
As previously mentioned, Apartment Strims has a sauna but we also recognise that this may not be enough for you. Zauchensee and Altenmarkt Hotels are nearly all equipped with wellness facilities that (for a small charge) can be used by other guests. There is everything from massages to beauty, steam rooms to jacuzzies and relaxation treatments.
Golf
The 18 hole masters golf course and the 9 hole compact course in the next village of Radstadt won't leave golf pros or golf beginners with anything to wish for. Not only the golf is enjoyable at the course, the breath-taking mountain panorama and the nature that you can enjoy at the Golfclub Radstadt is an experience that is one of a kind. The Birdie Jet - a gondola cable car- is a unique feature as well as teeing off from the 13th hole located at 994 metres of elevation guarantees not only pure golfing enjoyment but stunning views of the Salzburg Sporwelt.
Summer Skiing
Yes, skiing is still possible in summer. The glacier of the Dachstein mountains is high enough to maintain a good level of skiing throughout summer. Here at the Dachstein mountains you will also find the glaciers' Ice Palace and the Sky Walk.
