There are more than 500 buildings in the Old Town, representing the stylistic lines of Romanesque, Gothic, Mannerism, Baroque, Classicism, Eclecticism and Modernism.

History of Riga - The city was founded in 1201 by Bishop Albert; Although the local Liv tribes lived in this marshy area near the mouth of the Riga River in the Daugava, the city's history is associated with Germanic and Christian culture.
In 1282, Riga became a member of the Hanseatic League, strengthening its position among traders and craftsmen.

The city has evolved as a commercial, transit and later industrial centre. Until the 19th century, Riga developed as a German city, even when it was in Swedish, Polish and Russian, but Latvians are playing an increasingly important role in recent times.
