Before leaving San José province through its northeast border, we will first stop at the catholic church of San Isidro Labrador in Coronado to see its gothic architecture, and head to the Rancho Redondo lookout in Goicoechea to see back at the city. We will then make way to Cartago province and canton through its Llano Grande (its rose gardens JAN-APR) and Tierra Blanca agricultural districts, towards the Irazú volcano. Before heading south to the 18th century settlement ruins of Ujarrás, we may go to Guayabo National Monument, which lies on the Turrialba volcano's slopes, and contains the remains of the Guayabo indigenous civilization; and then head to the Cachí hydroelectric dam. We will head west to the Lankester Botanical Gardens (FEB-APR, JUN-AGO) in Paraíso and then to Cartago city, where the Basílica de los Ángeles, the country's biggest and most important church, and the Ruinas de Santiago Apóstol, depict our architecture and catholic background. We will take back again to San José through the southwest, through Corralillo and Quebradillas coffee districts, just to see San José by night in the Tarbaca lookout in Aserrí. Lunch, snacks, coffee/tea, and bathroom breaks are available throughtout the tour. Certain stops will depend on each group's interests.
As a social enthusiast (lawyer and geographer) I am very passionate of how Costa Rica has developed in the region. Being from the Great Metropolitan Area (parts of San José, Cartago, Heredia and Alajuela provinces in the Central Valley), where 60% of the country's population lives, I will show you how we lived in the past and do actually. Costa Rica is a small country, it does not take long to go to all 82 cantons in the 7 provinces, but presenting you 1 day in 7 of the 8 Cartago province's cantons (and several of San José), would be my pleasure. Cartago is a province full of biodiversity and amazing people and landscapes. Agriculture, volcanoes, indigenous and colonial ruins and sites, city lookouts, waterfalls and rivers, and all the stops we will make throughout the tour will not only emphasize on Costa Rica's nature, but also its people, their traditions, foods, ways and customs.
