We'll be learning to grow vegetables together - from sowing seeds to building a 'no dig' bed to planting out some seedlings. You'll be able to replicate this at home if you like - there's plenty of opportunity for questions, tips and tricks. We garden in a way that doesn't cost much, uses materials that would otherwise be thrown away, and in harmony with nature using permaculture principles. There are four parts to our experience: 1. Tea/Coffee/Cake and a tour of the garden when you arrive, with a brief chat about how we grow most of our food on not that much space, and with not that much time, energy or money. 2. We'll sow some seeds together - salad, beetroot, rocket, and whatever else needs doing seasonally. We'll do this in a polytunnel or outside depending on the weather. 3. We'll build a 'no dig' bed from scratch on some grassy ground, using cardboard and well-rotted horse manure (our compost!). The cardboard comes from local supermarkets (and helpful neighbours), we collect the horse manure from 'Highland Unbridled', a local horse riding centre. 4. We'll plant some seedlings in the bed we've just made. The varieties depend on what is ready at the time of your visit, but there'll always be something to plant out
I'm Mairi, a vegetable grower who moved to the Highlands in 2012. I am the founder of 'Highland Seedlings', and grow the vast majority of our the food I eat myself along with my husband Seamus. I also sell vegetable seedlings and help others set up their own vegetable garden. I am passionate about gardening organically and in harmony with nature, and with as little effort, time and money as possible (we don't dig here at 'Highland Seedlings'!). I love nothing more than getting folks excited about growing their own food! As a former academic learning and teaching are second-nature to me, and I am also well versed in accommodating any support needs you might have as I myself am disabled with chronic conditions.

The experience takes place in the 1/3 acre 'no dig' garden and orchard in Fearn in beautiful Easter Ross, about 45 minutes north of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. We will spend time outside and in one of our polytunnels but if it rains we can do everything inside the polytunnel. We have been turning our garden into a food-growing space since 2013, and are constantly adding new beds, paths and structures.
