When you arrive at Cookshop, an airy studio in trendy Clinton area of SE Portland (10 mins. from downtown), we’ll gather for hors d’oeuvres, sip our first wine, and introduce the Oregon wine scene, including fun facts about history and geology. We’ll keep things down to earth so no matter your level of knowledge, you’ll feel at ease. John will serve a selection of six wines, from iconic bottles to idiosyncratic wines from indie winemakers. The line-up offers great value, as he’ll be pouring wines that are hard to find and/or would be pricey on a restaurant wine list. You’ll get the equivalent of a little more than two generous glasses. Martha will serve a family-style dinner made from local, seasonal ingredients that play beautifully with the wines. We'll demystify Pinot Noir and give you a solid understanding of why Oregon Pinot is world-renowned, all in a casual, inclusive, and interactive atmosphere. You’ll be ready to walk into any tasting room or wine shop and find the perfect bottle for you (or buy one of the evening's wines from us!) Who should join us? - Visitors – from around the globe or right here in the Pacific Northwest -- looking to expand their knowledge about Oregon wine and food. - Locals who want to learn more about the bounty that’s in their own back yard. - Anyone who enjoys excellent food and wine served in a stylish setting, w/cool, friendly people.
John & Martha spend their free time cooking, drinking good wine, and hanging with friends at the dinner table. It’s what they do & they want to do it with you. Martha is a James Beard award winning writer. She was editor of Fine Cooking, food editor of the Oregonian, and founder of MIX magazine. Recent projects include Six Seasons, with Joshua McFadden, and the new Noma Guide to Fermentation. She’s known for her warmth and wit and makes friends wherever she goes. John was a river guide and skier in Taos, NM who turned wine pro. His hospitality skills were honed over Alaska campfires, in fine restaurants, and at picnic tables in gorgeous Willamette Valley vineyards. He spent a decade as marketing director at one of Oregon’s most prestigious wineries. John has an infectious enthusiasm for wine and an ability to make it accessible to anyone.

The event will be suitable and enjoyable for all levels of wine drinker. You'll be served enough food to make a full dinner with the equivalent of up to two full glasses of wine. We strive to create a relaxed and inclusive experience, sharing our knowledge of the local wine and food scene.
