What you'll do

Message us about dates of inquiry. Up to six passengers will be shuttled by boat to a remote coastal hammock island near Folly Beach and Kiawah where Charleston Oyster Farm Grows premium single oysters to be shucked on the half-shell at local raw bars. The crew are all scientists with backgrounds in eduction and outreach and are all members of the SC Shellfish Growers Association and also a deep knowledge of the local history. begin the tour only 8 miles from Historical Downtown Charleston at our wholesale facility which is the historic,Gullah Geechee owned, Backman’s Seafood Market on Sol Legare Road near Folly Beach on James Island. Bachman’s Seafood was an oyster cannery, they had a fleet of six shrimp boats and 60 employees in their hay day. This site has a lot of history and a lot of character! From there it’s a short boat ride through the Stono Inlet with views of the Atlantic Ocean. You are very likely to see dolphins so keep a lookout while listening to the eco/ history talk along the way. Arriving at the farm we would haul up our gear and explain how the process works while showing examples of the stages of growth. Guests will also enjoy freshest local oysters they ever had that are available nowhere else other than at the high end local raw bars in downtown Charleston such as 167 Raw Bar, The Darling Oyster Bar, Amen Street and Chubby Fish

Where you'll be

Our Facility is an old Shrimp house and oyster cannery from the 1960’s and the Oyster Farm, which you can only access by boat, is about three miles away and is adjacent to a private island in the Stono River. Having that close proximity and also being close to the restaurants that we provide for makes us a very sustainable operation.
