  • The Starter: 1/2 cup yogurt (Cow, sheep or goat. If you are making non-dairy use coconut yogurt)
  • 1 Quart mason jar with lid or other glass vessel with lid
  • For Incubation: A heating pad or a cooler with a hot water bottle as an alternative. A large pot with warm water or electric pot like an instant pot or ninja.
  • *Optional* A small pot and a way to heat your milk

My afternoon with Lela was a dream come true. I have had to learn to make yogurt on my bucket list for a while now and today was the day I crossed it off! Lela's class is well organized and the technique taught is extremely easy. First, we watched a video of her milking her goats, then we gathered together all of the ingredients and materials, and before I knew it, I had a quart of yogurt-to-be beginning it's a fermentation journey. Ic found not have been easier. Lela gave me a lot of tips and pointed out some variations, along with some great uses for the yogurt (salted lassis anyone?). While I thoroughly enjoyed the class in general, I especially appreciated seeing Lela thriving in her homesteading approach to modern life; truly an inspiration. Highly recommended.

This was an absolutely fantastic experience. I have been making my own yogurt for years, but had so many questions about things I couldn't get quite right. Lela has a background in science (I'm pretty sure microbiology), and she was able to answer my questions from that perspective. We talked about how and why the cultures multiply, best temperatures to achieve different goals, ways to get your milk to those temperatures, variations in outcome based on type of milk used (and even diet of the animals producing the milk!), etc. I waited to write this review for a couple of days so I could try out Lela's suggestions in real life, and am happy to report I am writing this while enjoying the best yogurt I've ever made. Totally worth the price, as you'll save the price of grocery store yogurt the first time you make your own; also awesome is the fact that you won't be buying or discarding plastic yogurt containers anymore. Another person in the class was brand-new to yogurt-making, and I think Lela did an awesome job of providing an introduction to that person, while also answering my slightly more advanced questions. So no matter what your level of experience (or inexperience), I would encourage you to sign up and get cultured!

Lela was so knowledgeable, informative, and thorough! She has a background in biology and has been making her own yogurts at home for years—and both areas of expertise came through in this class! I learned so much about yogurt making and left this class fully confident that I now have a skill for my kitchen and my household to make healthy and delicious yogurt on my own!
