This is an incredible trail running tour perfect for novice or experienced trail runners. We'll meet at the trailhead for Black Balsam Knob, a paved Forest Service road off of the Blue Ridge Parkway. From here, we'll discuss the final details of our run. The loop is a little over 5 miles and includes a mixture of trail and old road beds, with a little over 1000' of climbing. There are a couple of steeper sections that will be more of a hike than run. Depending on the sunset and your abilities, we may run this loop clockwise or counter-clockwise. Counter-clockwise, we'll start with a section of the 31-mile Art Loeb Trail - one of the best as it crosses over the bald summits of Tennent Mountain and Black Balsam Knob. This half of the run is singletrack and on more technical terrain which will require some hiking. The views from these mountains are some of the best in the entire Blue Ridge Mountains - and we'll be visiting them around sunset. Expect plenty of photo opportunities and a truly unique trail run few have experienced. After leaving the high mountain peaks, we'll follow an old railroad bed utilized by loggers in the early 1900's. We'll have some stellar views to the west as the final rays of light illuminate the horizon. I'll have a couple of lights to help us get back to the trailhead if it gets too dark. Afterward, we can enjoy some cold drinks before heading out.
After several years traveling the country in a van, I chose to live in Asheville for a reason. The high mountains, hidden overlooks, pristine waterfalls, and extensive history are just a few reasons I live here now. I can frequently be found running 20+ miles solo in the forest, but I had never run a mile until 2012 - so I also know what it takes to start from scratch. The same trails I'll take you on are the same ones I run even when I'm not guiding. As of 2019, I'm the only permitted trail running guide in Pisgah National Forest.

This loop pairs old railroad logging paths to beautifully built singletrack across the bald summits of Tennent Mountain and Black Balsam Knob, both at an elevation over 6,000'. We'll be crossing these peaks at sunset. Depending on the groups abilities and sunset time, we may run this loop in either direction.

This is a moderate trail run compared to most of the National Forest, but those newer to trail running may consider difficult. After enjoying the sunset at Black Balsam Knob, I'll have a light to help us finish the last half-mile to the trailhead.
